The iPhone 6s Is Coming In August With Some Fresh New Features (And A Few Disappointments)

You shouldn’t be surprised.  As soon as you locked into that two-year contract for the iPhone 6 (or a cheaper, older model), Apple is already planning to release another iteration of its famed smartphone.

Information is coming out today from a respected securities analyst with an excellent track record on Apple leaks who is suggesting we will see many new features with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.  The information seems very credible and is in line with that of other Apple insiders.

Let’s go ahead and take a look.

1) Force Touch

While an awesome new feature, this one should come as no surprise to anyone following Apple products.  Force Touch was introduced to the world earlier this year with the Apple Watch and the new Macbook Pro.  Apple is now extending it to the newest iPhone.  (We’ll wait and see if it’s present on the next iteration of the iPad.)

This will be an interesting feature to watch, and exactly HOW Apple rolls it out will be critical.  Force Touch on the Apple Watch definitely takes some getting used to.  How it will be implemented on the iPhone is anyone’s guess, especially since the iPhone is already loaded with several other gestures.

2) A 12 Megapixel Camera

For many generations, iPhones were the top dog in the smartphone camera category.  But now that the Samsung Galaxy S6 has taken the top smartphone camera ranking, Apple will be attempting to take it back.

While this may not be a huge leap in technology, it should improve photo quality when combined with Apple’s world class image processing.

3) A Big Processor and RAM Jump

Apple will introduce the A9 chipset and double the RAM to 2GB with the new iPhone 6 and 6S.  Look for this upgrade to dramatically improve the multitasking feature with iOS 9.

4) Improved Touch ID

As Apple hopes to make its new Apple Pay ubiquitous, expect the recognition rate of Touch ID to be improved even further.

5) An Upgrade To iOS 9

All the way back to the iPhone 3GS, Apple has used the ‘S Edition’ phones to release a polished upgrade to the previous operating system.  With the release of the iPhone 6 and 6S phones due out later this summer, this trend looks like it will continue.  In iOS 9 we will see an emphasis on speed and security.  Of course, with the doubling of the iPhone’s RAM, we could see a lot more than that.

6) A Camera Cover Lens

If all goes to plan, Apple hopes to release a limited number of iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus models with a sapphire cover lens.

7) Bending Issues Resolved

Remember “Bendgate” last September?  It seemed the iPhone 6 was too big and too thin to stand up to back pockets.  The bending issue will be resolved by using new casing materials as well as some internal design changes.

8)  An Additional Microphone

Another microphone will be added to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus to enhance voice quality.  The new mic will near the speaker.

9) An All New Casing Color

Apple will add a brand new casing color, rose gold, to its lineup to match the pricey rose gold Apple Watch Edition.

10) The Screen Size Will Stay The Same

And now for the big disappointment.  Apple will not scale down the size of its newest iPhone offering.  Screens will remain at 4.7  and 5.5 inches for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, respectively.  This will come as a shock to many who were hoping Apple would provide a smaller form factor to those of us with smaller hands and pockets.

Here’s hoping we at least get a smaller iPhone 6C.
